The Pocket Beebs Show is a tribute to the collectible franchises that not formed Allison Bamcat’s childhood, but her artistic styling. In the hot afternoon sun during elementary school, Allison spent hours drawing up imaginary creatures with her friends - creating their personalities along with what types of attacks and powers they had. Allison’s love for anime and cartoons continued to grow through her teenage years. 

Even during art school, Allison found it impossible to ignore her anime roots on the search for her own style. Finding solace in the creatures and characters that she created, Allison began leaning into them for comfort. These creatures started serving as avatars for her emotions, and quickly became manifestations of Allison’s feelings – monsters ripe in metaphors and symbolism... Crying clowns, phantasmal cats, and the objects around her anthropomorphized into companions. And as companions do, they made Allison feel safe.

Allison’s first art show upon graduating MassArt, debuted her first set of “Beebs,” the overarching name for her creatures. This new collection of Beebs, dubbed “Pocket Beebs” is a direct homage to how creating these creatures has carried her through her art career from the very beginning. And, in celebration of her artistic influences, Allison have collaborated with several of her artist friends to reinterpret Allison’s characters in their own style. With this ever-evolving concept, Allison is so excited to share this project with Los Angeles at Ewkuks Gallery. 

Allison Bamcat is a contemporary artist with an affinity for confectionary and phantoms. Through the use of acidic color, her paintings work to elicit feelings of her neon, nineties-childhood in Los Angeles, surrounded by sun-bleached, cheap plastic dolls and doodled-on stuffed toys. A menagerie of animals and creatures serve as avatars for the artist herself, assembling a series of surreal snapshots of her own personal journey, one of beautiful growth and also the simmer of trauma. With her candy-coated landscapes, there is an underlying sense of unease, whether through the piercing gaze of a voyeur parrot or in the melting and sinking of her figures. The loss of innocence and a sense of calm-among-the-chaos are feelings works to depict through the use of stark, flat fields of color against her obsessively-detailed brushwork. The velvet finish of gouache matched with her love of wood and paper leave subtle textures for her images to pop off of. She works to hypnotize her audience through her dizzying use of color and detail in her current body of acryla gouache paintings.
